When we first made this wine, Shiraz was hot and quickly becoming the grape du jour with red wine lovers. The colours in this painting made me think of the fruity quality of Shiraz and the unusual composition charmed me and earned my attention. The perfect art for an up and coming grape. - RM
Lena Shugar, artist designer and teacher, emerged from a childhood in Poland, Russia, Germany and Norway with a passion for colour, fantasy and imagery. These elements are apparent in her style and are enhanced by mature and confident control of brush and palette. Soon after her arrival in Canada as a teenager, she was fortunate to come under the tutelage of one of Canada' s foremost artists and teachers, Doris McCarthy. Shugar's early artistic work centred on colour and design. She became head of the Canadian Industries Limited Colour Studio and later an independent design consultant. In the 1970s, Shugar developed a series of techniques for teaching art to senior citizens that allowed students to liberate from the constraints of a conventional approach to painting and express individuality in their work. Lena's success with her students comes from her personal warmth, masterful technique and enthusiasm for painting. These same qualities radiate from her art with an outpouring of colourful, joyful and mystical works. Her painting in watercolour, acrylic and mixed media is fresh, spontaneous and highly personal. Her works are in numerous private collections as well as the Board of Education, Baycrest Home for the Aged and Central Park Lodge and Wagman Center. Lena resides in Toronto.
